Mongolian sustainable textile production standard

In view of global endeavors to switch to sustainability, Mongolian government has adopted sustainable textile production standard that reflects the indicators of international criteria and therefore ensures an environmentally friendly and socially viable practices at the processing stage of cashmere value chain. The Mongolian national standard is the first ever guiding document that will lead the country’s light industry development to become sustainable.

What is MNS 6926:2021 Sustainable textile production – Code of practice

This is a nationwide standard for improving operational systems for textile processing industries for sustainable production. The main scope of the standard is to provide basic principles of sustainable textile production, its main criteria and provide methodology for assessment, verification and certification.

 

Why should local factories adopt this standard?

By adopting this standard into their operation, processing companies shall be able to implement integrated policy for sustainable production, decreasing the negative environmental impacts and increase their social responsibilities. Additionally, companies can create opportunities to be transparent about their sustainability.

How are animal welfare and rangeland conservation reflected in “MNS 6926 2021 Sustainable textile production”?

In order to meet sustainability criteria for ensuring animal welfare and rangeland protection, the standard indicates that the companies need to source raw materials from herders and herders’ organizations, which have adopted national standard MNS 6891:2020 ‘Responsible Nomad’. Environmental management reflected in the MNS 6926:2021 Sustainable textile production”

 

The standard has 7 chapters and 35 criteria. Some of the criteria are as follows:

  • According national standard, wool and cashmere processing companies must develop water and energy saving plan and shall reduce at least 5% every year.
  • Wastewater treatment plant shall meet the requirements of Mongolian national standard “Basic requirements for the location, treatment technology and level of wastewater treatment plant”. The quality of wastewater supplied to the sewerage system shall meet the requirements of above mentioned standard.
  • Processing companies must use colorants and chemicals which meet requirements of internationally recognized ‘green’ certifications such as REACH, ZDHC, MRSL, RSL, Blue sign, GOTS, GreenScreen Certified, OEKO-TEX.

Who accredits local industries according to MNS 6926:2021 Sustainable textile production?”

Mongolian Wool and Cashmere Association has an independent certification body ensured ISO 17065 international standard, accredited by Mongolian Accreditation System. Hence, textile processing companies are monitored and audited by this certification organization.

Currently, 18 local industries have agreed to transforming their businesses adhering to sustainable models and mobilizing the resources to stand as pioneers adopting the required standards and inspiring the other industries for the change.
